S.C. home sales increase 13% in June 2009

The number of homes sold in South Carolina has risen for the second-straight month. Nearly 4,200 homes were sold in June, an increase of 13% compared with May, according to the latest report from the S.C. Association of Realtors.
In May, home sales totaled 3,704, which was an increase of 16% over sales in April.
June’s figures also represent the best year-over-year showing so far in 2009, with an 11.3% drop compared with June 2008 numbers.
Of the 15 regions reporting home sales for the association, 14 reported an increase in sales compared with May. The only area that reported a loss was the Southern Midlands Association of Realtors. It sold three more homes in May than it did in June, according to the report.
Of the state’s three major metropolitan areas, Charleston posted a 9.4% increase in June sales compared with May, Columbia saw a 10.5% increase and Greenville had a 13.3% increase, the report said.
The median price of homes in South Carolina was $147,000, up from $142,000 in May. The average number of days a home was on the market was 144, down from 155 in May.

for the Homeownership Assistance Program
Lexington County is accepting applications for its new Homebuyer Assistance Program. Funding for the program is provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) HOME Investment Partnerships Program. Assistance will be provided in the amount of $5,000 on a first-come/first-served basis for eligible applicants.

Funding for the Homeownership Assistance Program is Provided by HUD’s HOME Investment Partnership Program (HOME). HOME is the largest Federal block grant to State and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households. HOME provides formula grants to states and local governments. The funds are used, often in partnership with local nonprofit groups, to fund a wide range of activities that build, buy, and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income people.

General eligibility requirements to receive assistance for this new program are:
The home must be located within Lexington County.
The home must be occupied as the primary residence of the applicant.
The home must meet, at a minimum, Section 8 Housing Quality Standards (HQS). A Lexington County Building Inspector will assess the home to determine compliance with quality standards. If corrective work is required, all work to address HQS violations must be completed prior to the closing date. Down payment assistance funds cannot be used for minor repairs or to correct violations.
Homes purchased with assistance through this program must meet the HUD Single Family Mortgage Limits under 203 (b) of the National Housing Act (12 U.S.C. 1709(b)). The County’s maximum purchase price for a home is currently $144,584 for a single-family dwelling (95% of the median area’s purchase). Homes that exceed this cost are not eligible for assistance through this program.
An appraisal must be done on the subject home/property. The home must appraise for at least the value of the purchase price.
Homes selected for purchase must be built after 1978.

Lexington SC brings the National Public Parks Tennis Tournament

The Lexington County Tennis Complex will host the 83rd Annual National Pulbic Parks Tennis Championships from July25 through August 2, 2009. Organizers expect as many as 800 players for the event and are excited to be hosting the event. The tournament will feature divisions for every age group and emphasizes youth and family tennis. Prize money for age divisions will be up for grabs to the winners and should bring in some top ranked players. The Radisson Hotel in Columbia is set to be the tournament headquarters and the event promises much more than tennis with live music, a casino night, and a children's night.
JUNIORS July 25 - 28, 2009
Boys and Girls (10, 12, 14, 16, 18) Singles & Doubles (MFI)
The Junior Singles Divisions will play BEST two out of three sets, with a match tie-break to be used in lieu of a third set, if necessary. (Main Draw and Consolation Draw). The Junior Doubles Divisions will play 8-game Pro-Sets.
FAMILY July 28 - 29, 2009
Husband/Wife, Father/Son, Mother/Daughter, Father/Daughter, Mother/Son
The family divisions will offer something new for this tournament. All family divisions will be offered in two levels: Family Open Division (Players rated 4.5 and higher or any player requesting this level) and the Family Fun Division (Players rated 4.0 and lower). You will register on line for the proper division: Husband/Wife, Father/Son, Mother/Daughter, Father/Daughter or Mother/Son. After that, you should email the tournament director to request which division you would like to play.
